Program Director, NASA Asteroid Redirect Mission
Dr. Gates has served the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for more than 20 years. She is Program Director for NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission and leads the cross-Directorate, cross-Center definition of this endeavor. Her rich and diverse background includes her previous role as Senior Technical Advisor to the Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations, in which she advised and supported the Associate Administrator on a broad array of strategic and tactical issues affecting the mission directorate. She provided critical programmatic support in the implementation of a flexible, sustainable human spaceflight program portfolio, including both government and commercially owned and operated elements, during the transition from the Space Shuttle Program. Prior to that, Dr. Gates was on a temporary assignment as acting Deputy Associate Director for Earth Science Projects Continuity Missions at the Goddard Space Flight Center. In this role, she provided overall programmatic leadership for several Earth science flight projects in development and operations. Dr. Gates began her career in space radiation effects engineering at the Goddard Space Flight Center. She is the recipient of the prestigious NASA Exceptional Service Medal and Silver Snoopy Award. She has a bachelor’s, master’s and PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park.
